Why learning & development as a career choice?
Is it ever a career choice?!?!  I think many of us fall into it, although in my case I moved from teaching little kids to big ones.  I was a high school music teacher for a few years after graduating from the Conservatorium of Music and working as a pro musician around Sydney – the problem was that teaching music was making me hate my passion. So, I somehow convinced my first employer to hire me as an IT-illiterate computer trainer and I was training MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint within a week!  I was quickly able to show my creative abilities which resulted in being later used as a soft-skills.

Later on in my career, I found work in consulting, courseware development, managing, etc.  Eventually I did my Masters in Adult Ed and that sealed my fate – I’m now doing the Doctorate program!  The other good news is, is that I still love playing music and continue to regularly gig around Sydney.

Recent project:
Having been with Logica for only 6 months and this is a Greenfield role, everything I am working on is a project and new to the business. Given this, obviously the most important component of this work is the L&D strategy and framework development, which has fortunately coincided with a new global CEO coming onboard and therefore a new strategy globally and nationally.

As a very matrix-based organisation, the challenge is having a robust, malleable, and simple strategy, framework and plans that meets the needs now, and into the future.   The strategy and framework that has been developed should provide this by not only providing learning pathways by linear progressions but via a number of dimensions – the framework, is really aligned in its matrix nature.
