Summary

Our culture and life experiences have profound influence on what we need out of a training space to feel safe and supported. Minorities and groups that have typically faced societal discrimination often assume that environments are unsafe for them until explicitly proven otherwise. As a facilitator, we must work doubly hard to ensure that we are competently informed about cultural context and that we are able communicate this to the people we provide services to. Creating an inclusive environment enhances learning and development (especially in supporting retention and application of learning) and creates an overall more positive learning experience. Responding to cultural needs in a training environment ensures equity of outcome, not equity of input.
